Hm, as the chip isn't supported by the XFree86 radeon driver I'm
using the vesa driver (relevant excerpts below). This configuration
was working OK during the ~3 years I own this notebook. The (over)
heating showed up first around 3 month ago or so - but wasn't a real
problem 'till summer temperatures arrived...

In /etc/X11/XF86config (last changed Jan 15 2007) I have:
Section "Device"
### Available Driver options are:-
### Values: <i>: integer, <f>: float, <bool>: "True"/"False",
### <string>: "String", <freq>: "<f> Hz/kHz/MHz"
### [arg]: arg optional
#Option "ShadowFB" # [<bool>]
#Option "DefaultRefresh" # [<bool>]
Identifier "Card0"
Driver "vesa"
VendorName "ATI Technologies Inc"
BoardName "M24 1T [FireGL M24 GL]"
BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection
And /var/log/XFree86.0.log says:
_XSERVTransSocketOpenCOTSServer: Unable to open socket for inet6
_XSERVTransOpen: transport open failed for inet6/ipaddi:0
