Hmmm.  I don't have that set in my ssh config files.  I guess I just 
don't do anything that would require it.

BTW, one more thing that appears to be necessary:

10. Run 'mkfontdir /usr/X11R7/lib/X11/fonts/{Speedo,CID}'

    This is noted in the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file:

        (WW) `fonts.dir' not found (or not valid) in 
"/usr/X11R7/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo/".
                Entry deleted from font path.
                (Run 'mkfontdir' on "/usr/X11R7/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo/").
        (WW) `fonts.dir' not found (or not valid) in 
"/usr/X11R7/lib/X11/fonts/CID/".
                Entry deleted from font path.
                (Run 'mkfontdir' on "/usr/X11R7/lib/X11/fonts/CID/").
