listing available 802.11 networks

What is the preferred way to list available 802.11 networks?
Sometimes, I can use 'ifconfig wpi0 list scan'; however, even when it
works it seems to drop my association with an AP.  Other systems seem
to be able to display a list of available networks while associating
with one particular one; can NetBSD?
