 The patch you applied from FreeBSD Ports certainly solves the problem
 too, and I don't want to hold you up with this. I'm fine with closing
 the ticket. (But to answer your question, technically what I added in
 my patch should've been in the source to begin with: there should've
 been an exception handler of some sort in that code block. The thing
 I like better about my patch is just that it exposes there's
 something quirky going on, rather than papering over it. I like to
 imagine that given all the inveterate tinkerers who build from
 source, one might notice it and be inspired by curiosity to have a
 closer look. But there's always so much to do and not enough time!
 And this package seems to be abandoned upstream.)
