appears to be the culprit.

Reverting to r1.42 of

  src/sys/arch/powerpc/powerpc/sig_machdep.c

produces a working kernel under which the so-far-observed problem programs
work properly and do not crash.

Tested with HEAD as of around 201303050540Z and the above reversion.
