I agree. If we had (internally, as a .json for example) a list of
main directories on mirrors, we could supply two simple things that
would IMHO help a lot:
1) A quick link to an amd64 install CD iso image.
This would hit the main ftp server in the dumb case, but the link
could be replaced with javascript tricks, either random or with
very simple "geoip" like rules. I bet we don't cause too few load
for the efficiency of the distribution sheme to actually matter.
2) A form where you can select (with help links) a few basic things
and while you select options, the target link in the big "download
now" button is replaced according to your selection.
Options would be: release you want (this may exclude -current),
architecture, mirror to use, install method, ...
The "configuration data" needs to be updated with every release and mirror
information needs maintenance as well, but I suppose mirrors rarely shift
stuff around (but just go away or are created new).
