That's what I meant - your first example was missing the "using" line,
and presumably the interface was using PIO mode.  It seems buggy not to
have printed what it was using, though.

That is indeed the expected speed.

All that said, I'm not sure what advice to give about the timeout.  It
may be that PIO mode is flaky, and the disk is really ok.  Or not.
