I found mail/exim can do "AUTH PLAIN" and "AUTH LOGIN" smtp client
authentication out of the box (and of course uses STARTTLS to encrypt
those plaintext passwords).
Integrates as easy as postfix (IMO) and the configuration file has a
sufficient amount of comments for me to understand it.
