Thank to Hubert's hint I found an even better alternative
for Mac OS X: /bin/ksh
Actually, I think it's probably worth just defaulting to
pdksh on allplatforms except NetBSD.
Not really. Solaris 11 uses ksh93 as /bin/sh which should work
just fine. And FreeBSD's /bin/sh should be reasonably fast
as well.
But it is something we could consider on platforms which
use /bin/bash as /bin/sh.
