Hmm, maybe it was indeed just an amd64 problem that I had then.

Might be worth posting this on the macppc list since macs have had
firewire for a long time. I think firewire support is not enabled by
default in the kernel though. I was going to test it but I was having
enough problems just getting it to boot so I haven't followed up on
it.
