I usually even start ebook-viewer directly on an ebook file. And I think
I liked the one from calibre 3.x better than the current one. But we
also have print/foliate for pure reading.

What's in my eyes more the "killer-app" aspect of calibre is the
"ebook-convert" command. And I had a bunch of ebooks with bad formatting
(they looked like they were home-made somewhere) and for that
"ebook-edit" knows its way through the complicated rules for the XML
schema in an epub file.
