That's a different kind of problem, and very likely is related to the
NAT table timeout in the router.   With the wpi / wpa_supplicant problems,
the whole network just vanishes (that is, wpa_supplicant disconnects),
sending pings (or attempting to) is no help at all.

For systems where continuous access through a cheap NAT is required,
keeping some kind of traffic flowing can be a good way to keep the connection
functional.
