The Prolific adapters I've used have been buggy; while I've only used
two of them in limited circumstances (to connect GPSRs) I've found that
they could drop characters.  (As one might expect they "just worked" on
Windows, but I had to modify gpsbabel for both OS/X and NetBSD/i386 to
make it work around the adapters' misbehaviour.)
