Yes, the patch is still necessary. Ok, actually it's not a patch in
the classical sense. Simply execute the script anywhere after
installing GCC (the exact syntax can be found in the script). It
detects the installation path of GCC automatically and puts three
object files into a directory, whose content is linked into every
binary built with the compiler.
