Just for the record, here is what's in that old box:

nVidia:
GeForce 6150SE nForce 430

This will sound pretty lame, but I have not been able to find a 
doc listing supported hardware for the 8.0 release. No doubt 
that is pilot error.

In keeping with Benny's suggestion, I connected a USB CD drive 
to the computer and got the "no console device" error again, but 
it seemed to me to pop up more neatly and quickly than when 
using the onboard CD drive, which "felt" at any rate like 
progress. <g> Here is what I copied from the screen:

init: trying /sbin/init/

Lastly, still on the video question for now:

I don't seem to have an opportunity to do that while booting the 
install disk, but, like I say, I'm open to suggestions. When M$ 
announced (some years ago, yes?) its imminent release of Windows 
10, I was informed that my eMachine running 7 was not a 
candidate for the upgrade to 10, no doubt due to some 
shortcoming in it's hardware.
