Yes,
mbox is just an option for small mailboxes and mail storages.

Cyrus used it's own ressource optimized storage and database system (near 
maildir, as mails could be read as plain too if required) with some further 
extensions for more efficiency and functionality.

From the view of many dovecot users dovecot is more easy to set up then cyrus 
because it integrates MDA, MTA, LDA POP/IMAP aso. while cyrus scales better (up 
to very large ISP/enterprise level email systems), but is possibly more complex 
to set up (incl. management tools) as it is "just" a POP/IMAP and LDA server.

Someone calls cyrus something like "the reference impenentation of IMAP" 
because it realizes the most of the current IMAP specifications, but not all at 
any time. So this might be not true at all ;)

At the and it depend from your application and knowlegde too what you prefer 
here ;)
