I can't speak for HP boxes, but in the IBM world most of the servers
use the exact same optical drive as laptops, and there's no support
issues with them with the various operating systems used. Grated,
NetBSD isn't one of them but I'd be very surprised if there were any
problems.
Having a USB optical burner is really nice. I don't have one but I
borrowed one once. Now I want one. Most newer machines can boot off of
USB devices, including optical drives, so it's really a nice to have
for backups and restores and stuff.
