Sounds like a permission problem on the device. 

Mine look like this:
lrwx------  1 root  wheel      6 Oct 15  2008 sound -> sound0
crw-rw-rw-  1 root  wheel  42, 0 Apr 16 22:22 sound0
crw-rw-rw-  1 root  wheel  42, 1 May  2  2007 sound1
crw-rw-rw-  1 root  wheel  42, 2 May  2  2007 sound2
crw-rw-rw-  1 root  wheel  42, 3 May  2  2007 sound3

mocp dumps core on me randomly. I haven't updated though.
