That's what I did, but I was hoping for something less drastic, since
the situation was so easy to get into. It was a shame of my 115 days
uptime (the previous reboot was for the same reason!), and interrupted
my mail service.

I don't know why the drive doesn't like the "digital" playing mode of
cdplay, but I've never had it work properly on any drive that I tried.

All those drives (3) work fine with cdparanoia.

(I tried it on a different drive. in my laptop, and there at least it
plays the audio, but only after errors and degrading the speed:
