... so why wouldn't it?  Is it because this system is generally
expecting a serial console only?  If I power on the host with the
monitor plugged in I don't get the typical video-card greet (nor the
BIOS greet, but I wasn't really expecting that, tbh).

vga(4) actually drives the ISA interface.  On the Soekris, the ISA
registers for the VGA aren't mapped to anything.

hmmm ... are there variants of the vga driver which uses the PCI
registers?
(assuming I understood what you meant)

Radeonfb should be able to deal with that.
