I got a tip to boot with -x, which I tried.  Lots of debug output, of
course, and the bits I can see about drm look as if the driver is happy.
At the end, just before the hang, I now get

nouveaufb0 at nouveau0
nouveaufb0: WARNING: power management not supported
nouveau0: info: registered panic notifier
