I don't think DIAGNOSTIC or DEBUG will help - there isn't much in the module code for that. (Setting module_verbose_on was supposed to enable extra messages, but it doesn't seem to have helped.)

I don't suppose there's any chance of getting a core dump from this?

Does core-dumping require the dump device's driver to be loaded? (I imagine you're loading from and dumping to a pci-based hard drive?)
