OK -- that boot issue is solved, but a new one for allocating ttys has cropped 
up, manifests itself w/ xterms failing to launch:

open ttydev: No such file or directory
open ttydev: No such file or directory
open ttydev: No such file or directory
open ttydev: No such file or directory
open ttydev: No such file or directory
open ttydev: No such file or directory
...
