...and it would be useful to *also* take the output of these and
render it, both to make sure it hasn't changed the appearance of the
output and also to make sure that both terminal definitions generate
the same appearance.

Rendering the test output should be straightforward (provided that the
test terminal types are defined with a little care) -- the only
difficulty I can see is figuring out which points in the input stream
correspond to completed updates where a screendump should be generated
and compared.
