To anyone following this thread: some progress was made in understanding the
cause of the problem.

My current hypothesis is that during the initialization of the acpi(4)
subsystem, something touches the EC's operation region before the acpiec(4)
has been successfully attached. A possible solution could be found from
attaching acpiec(4) to acpinodebus right after the "ACPICA initialization".
