That's the major problem. My current 'simulation' of this is a
Tk widget that tells me which removable devices are mounted
and an automounter dismount period of 3 seconds.

Systems that used that scheme didn't cause such problems.

People easily understand that this is a bad thing to do. You just
have make sure that the system handles such an event gracefully.
