I tried the Vbaux solution to resurrect a dead DS1687 RTC chip and it
didn't work - probably the enable bit is not set by default.

I also tried to cut the chip open to cut the internal battery and contact
an external one, but I failed. Maybe my mechanical skills are not up to
the task.

The chips are still available for about $12 (new).
