Re: ixpide0:0:0: lost interrupt hang

On Fri, 3 Oct 2008, Manuel Bouyer wrote:

What's strange is that the reset fails. This should not happen, unless
the drive stops responding to the bus.
Another way for this to happen would be the controller stopping forwarding
register read/writes to the disk.
Is the ixpide controller a SATA controller ? If so maybe the PHY got down
for some reason. Maybe you'd have better luck using it in AHCI mode ...

Switched the BIOS to AHCI and just successfully installed
over 600 binary packages (3.7G) over NFS (previously would
choke with a dozen or so)

        Many *many* thanks!

Updated dmesg attached for anyone interested

Would it make sense to add a note to ixpide(4) that some
controllers have been known to hang under load when run in
Native IDE mode but work fine when AHCI mode is selected
        in the BIOS?

        --Side Comment--
Amusingly a previous hang gave my best ever failure mode
after fsck - the system would boot up towards the end of
rc.d then say 'rebooted by root' and reboot. Turned out
that apache was being installed when the disk hung, and
after fsck /etc/rc.d/apache contained the contents of (a
deleted) dhclient.conf followed by nulls, which started
        "reboot 4;"...
