This is kinda why Gentoo is interesting to the BSDer I think. It's
able to build and install itself from source, and often times you can
unpack a directory on some system and run it in an already running
kernel using chroot.

I had it working on another "embedded" device but it's been utterly
impossible for me to get it booting on x86...
