Same problem, but with a MTEC-1230/28 MHz & 2 IDE-drives.

You could use the "COFFEE"-Kernel from the Gateway!-II (which worked fine
with my configuration though I don`t know the differences) for booting
and then build your own kernel as suggested in the documentation.
I build a kernel for the A1200 without SCSI & GfxBoard-support, if you
are interested in it just mail me.
