Icons missing on my pixmap app

I wanted to create a few small icons and built graphics/pixmap from
pkgsrc. It's ancient code that produces XPM files. But the buttons
have only text, not the expected images. The package does not seem to
depend on anything else, like Xaw3d that I vaguely recall handles menu
images.
The same result occurred with a prebuilt package on arch64 as building on amd64.
Am I missing something locally?
