I'm pretty sure that this breaks in the same way with pbulk too FWIW, as 
its pkg-build script only cd's into the package directory *after* running 
the pkg-up-to-date script.

This would explain some anomalies I used to see with certain packages 
always being rebuilt in pbulk, and one of the reasons why I added the 
reason logging to bob so that it would be clearer why this was happening.
