That happens a lot. Most of the time you don't need to kill Firefox to recover from the bad state. Open "about:processes", find the hanged process, and kill it with the kill button at the right side of the screen.
(Yes, this is annoying, but I haven't got the nerve to dive into its gigantic codebase yet. It's on my TODO list for like forever.)
