 I still get:

 checking for flex... no
 checking for lex... lex
checking whether lex is flex... no
checking lex output file root... lex.yy
 checking lex library... -ll
checking whether yytext is a pointer... no
 configure: error: Flex is required
 *** Error code 1

 Stop.
 bmake: stopped in /pkgsrc/source/pkgsrc/devel/bison
 *** Error code 1

That is after checking that devel/flex builds, but not installing it.
BTW: This is on Solaris 10, lex is /usr/ccs/bin/lex.
