Before I try with the ktrace command, I will ask if the scanimage -L command gives a useful result?

netbsd1# scanimage -L
device `snapscan:libusb:/dev/usb4:/dev/ugen0' is a EPSON EPSON Scanner1 flatbed scanner

Can someone help to access the scanner as normal user?

Sometimes I use ktrace to run a program to see what devices it is using.
Try that. Then look at the owner/group and permission of the device
files and your own groups.
