A tiny update:
As a result of a recent macOS update I had the occasion to need to
reboot my main desktop machine, a "Late 2009 iMac 27 inch" ("iMac10,1").
It has 16GB of RAM installed.
So I thought I'd try booting NetBSD on it.
It happily discovers and boots the USB stick I had been trying
unsuccessfully to boot on the macbook.
However it does not seem to discover the root/boot device (though it
does discover all the other USB and firewire attached devices), so I
can't even get it far enough to save the dmesg output (without a video
camera, that is). If I get another chance, or I get otherwise inspired
enough to shut my desktop down again, I may try putting an install image
onto a true USB disk (of the spinning rust variety) and try booting
that, or I could even try burning a CD, though the CDROM on this machine
is rather tired and worn out and is very unreliable.
