So, just for shits and giggles, here's twenty xterm color pairs from
my master list of decently legible and reasonably nice-looking ones.
If anyone can provide a set of colors for ls that works nicely with
all of them, I'll pipe down, even though the full list is a lot
longer :-)

   -fg royalblue3 -bg lavenderblush
   -fg blueviolet -bg peachpuff
   -fg blueviolet -bg plum2
   -fg violetred4 -bg azure3
   -fg ghostwhite -bg deeppink4
   -fg white -bg palevioletred4
   -fg yellow -bg chocolate
   -fg ghostwhite -bg seagreen4
   -fg wheat -bg turquoise4
   -fg white -bg steelblue4
   -fg yellow -bg deepskyblue3
   -fg white -bg deepskyblue
   -fg turquoise2 -bg '#007faf'
   -fg turquoise2 -bg slateblue
   -fg gold -bg slateblue
   -fg orange2 -bg slateblue4
   -fg ivory2 -bg '#300d9a'
   -fg orangered -bg navyblue
   -fg gold -bg '#27275f'
   -fg turquoise1 -bg midnightblue
