I'm now testing with following combinations:

  5608586 Jun 18 15:23 packages/All/avr-libc-1.8.0nb4.tgz
 21894076 Jun 18 15:13 packages/All/simulavr-1.0.0nb20140618.tgz
170587975 Jun 18 15:05 packages/All/avr-gcc-4.8.3.tgz
  1647621 Jun 18 14:21 packages/All/avr-gdb-7.6.1.tgz
  4515895 Jun 18 14:14 packages/All/avr-binutils-2.24.tgz

wip/avr-libc 1.8.0 (almost PLIST change only)
wip/simulavr-git (git) (not easy to commit to proper)
wip/avr-gcc 4.8.3 (not by PR/48890, sorry. Where are the patches ?)
wip/avr-gdb 7.6.1
cross/avr-binutils 2.24

I understand neither avr-gcc-4.5.3 nor avr-gcc-4.7.3 places libiberty.a
but avr-gcc-4.8.3 does (I think we need the change of its PATH, and I do).

Thanks a lot,
