I am not an expert in this area, but I would have expected a to have a
small offset (to make space for APM and the bootloader) - but maybe
that just goes into the unused space at the beginning of a.

That is the "raw disk" partition, it is typical for disklabel and looks
good.

Someone should fix either installboot or the manual page ;-)
