I see neither USB nor IDE devices attaching. How long did it sit there? If USB is the problem there might be error messages after a few minutes but I'd guess there's something wrong with the IDE driver :/

Bingo!

I got around to booting a -current kernel and disabled wdc via userconf. The machine booted up fully (aside from not having access to local disk
or CD-ROM).

The same is true for NetBSD-5.0_STABLE:

OK, so what changed about "wdc* at obio" between -4 and -5?

A lot. Not so much in the wdc driver itself but in the way the PCI and other bus abstractions work. So, my first guess would be that we for some reason don't get the interrupt type right ( as in level vs. edge trigger - the IDE bus(es) get probed with interrupts enabled, if we miss things here we'll lose ). OF is supposed to tell us what kind of interrupt we need, of course in some cases it doesn't so we have to guess - as far as I know all pre-uninorth wdc at obio used edge triggered interrupts ( my beige G3 and PB3400c certainly do but who knows, the iMac may be an exception )
So, what's in your wdc's interrupts ( or AAPL,interrupts ) property?

have fun
Michael
