I guess it depends on your definition of "magic". :-)

I consider anything that happens outside of the OS's control to more or less be magic. If it works, it's great magic. If it breaks my rig, it's black magic.

If the OS is intelligent enough to understand it is waking up from sleep, why can it not activate a certain application?

Good point, but I'd want the screensaver activated _before_ the hibernate to avoid a physical race condition of someone trying to kill the screen lock before it can launch when the system wakes up.

I was asking in my previous post if hacking /etc/powerd/scripts/sleep_button was a possible solution.

Yep. That'd be the way to go. Sorry I can't give you a more specific solution or suggestion.
