I ended up going with maybe an easier solution.

I installed the prosody package.

I edited a single file prosody.cfg.lua. For now I commented out the ssl 
block and added a single VirtualHost line.

I copied rc.d script in place and configured rc.conf for prosody=yes

Then I used prosodyctl adduser to add two accounts.

Pidgin and Apple Messages both work fine.  Now to use it for a few days
