So, I tried selecting the last option, then I entered "userconf disable i916drmkms", then I entered "boot", and I got the same results: a horizontal line of numbers, then a black screen. Was that what you were suggesting that I do? Sorry, I have no experience with booting BSD this way.

One thing that I did notice, though, is that it is engaging the screen in some manner when it's black, because no matter how long I leave it sitting, the monitor only tells me "Entering Power Saver Mode" when I power off the computer.
