Installer dies

Hello, folks,

I have installed NetBSD once, on a 12 year old laptop. That went without a hitch.  I am now trying to install on a newer workstation, and am experiencing the following issue, whether I boot via USB or CD:

- I power on the system, and shortly see the initial NetBSD dialog. On the USB, it gives me two options: 1 to install NetBSD, or 2 to drop to the boot shell (I think). On CD it gives me three options: 1 to boot normally, 2 to boot (in a manner I don't recall), or 3 to drop to the boot shell.

- From either, if I select 1, or just let it time out and do it automatically, I see a horizontal line of numbers appear, and then the screen goes black, never to return. There is no flashing of the USB or motion of the CD, and no key combinations cause anything to happen. I just have to push the power button to power it off (which is instantaneous). (My successful install on my laptop was from CD, and after the horizontal line of numbers, I saw normal init messages.)

This is some system information that I collected by booting a Gentoo Live USB on the system:
