That's right. I just confirmed this on a Linux system.

One thing I notice is, Linux fires both IPv4 and IPv6 queries first and if
both are unresolved then only it goes into domain name heuristics. That
makes it a little safer.

BTW, my original problem is partly because my hostname = domainname? Bad
practice? But I don't find that to be so uncommon.
