Yesterday the problem started happening again.  When it does, the
network does not come online, so i cannot SSH into the machine.

My current theory is that it's related to the HDMI to VGA converter
i was using with a VGA monitor.  I swapped in an HDMI display and the
problem has not happened since.  I will continue to, um, "monitor"
the situation.
