So X11 is OK. > > But on the graphical login screen it just goes blank and returns to login. startx and xdm (if that is your graphical login screen) use different session startup scripts. startx uses ~/.xinitrc and xdm uses ~/.xsession (actually it is even run from /etc/X11/xdm/Xsession). I usually link one to the other but maybe you have not. So it seems that Xsession or ~/.xsession fails for you. Other graphical login screens might use a different startup script, probably not even located in your $HOME.
