Ordinary user account can't log in

I rebooted my test NetBSD 10 laptop today. (Thinkpad W500, Core 2
Duo, AMD GPU, 8G RAM, SSD, running x86-64 version).

`root` can log in to... whatever the basic WM it has by default.

My ordinary unprivileged user account can't.

I can flip to a vconsole and log in from text mode, no problem. So
it's not my password.

I can run `startx` and Xfce loads fine. So X11 is OK.

But on the graphical login screen it just goes blank and returns to login.

I updated with `pkgin update` then `pkgin upgrade`. Rebooted. No change.

i have little NetBSD experience and no idea where to continue
troubleshooting this.

Could anyone give me any pointers please?
