newsyslog sometimes does not find syslog.pid

This is on 8.0_RC1 amd64.

Occasionally (not regularly) I get the following email alert:

    newsyslog: /var/run/syslogd.pid: No such file or directory

What does this indicate and what can I check in this regard.
