The xterm emulation is (more or less) fixed. Setting TERM doesn't control
xterm but tells other programs what the terminal expects. Since TERM=xterm
and TERM=vt100 is almost the same, either works for most programs.

Other terminal emulators may offer a more precise or complete VT100 emulation.
